In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
